Tanya came to us as she was being evicted from her apartment because she had fallen behind on rent.  She had recently taken custody of her nephews to avoid their placement into foster care.  The added expense of caring for these youngsters led to her inability to manage rent and all her other bills.  She was facing placement in a homeless shelter when she found New Ground.

“Thankfully I learned of New Ground and my family was saved from going into a shelter.  New Ground helped me right from the beginning, getting me legal help to deal with my former landlord and negotiate a deal for what I owed.  So I wasn’t stuck with such a huge bill that I could never pay.”

Tanya quickly started attending school.  She was driven to earn a college degree and increase her earnings so she could support her nephews more successfully.  She first secured an Associate Degree and went on to receive a Bachelor Degree all while working and paying down her outstanding debts.

“My greatest accomplishments have been my education and paying off all my debts.  I never thought it would happen!  And it wouldn’t have, not without New Ground.  I needed you guys to push me and pull me and keep me moving forward.  Sometimes I just wanted to stop, lay down and give up.  But New Ground staff never let that happen.  When I wasn’t sure I could still do it you all believed I could.  That’s what made it happen.

This program is hard but so worth it.  It’s not for everybody.  You have to really want it.  I know I did.  New Ground gave me the support, discipline, guidance – really everything I needed to make it happen.  And now look! I have my own home that I am renting and my boys are doing great.  And I started my Master’s Degree in Social Work! I am even looking into homeownership.  Sometimes I can’t believe just what I’ve done.”
