On Thursday, October 6 2022, New Ground hosted its 22nd Annual Groundbreakers Gala at the Garden City Hotel. This was the first time our supporters gathered in person for this celebratory event since 2020, and it was surely a night to remember! Entertainment was provided by the Uniondale High School Show Choir, Rhythm of the Knight, as well as the presentation of the colors by the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment Marine Corps Color Guard. Updates were provided about parents, children, and Veterans participating in New Ground’s programs, as well as the ongoing expansion efforts to help even more homeless in need.

Recognizing over 30 years of changing lives for the better, this year’s event honored Donald Gelestino, President of Champion Elevator, with the Groundbreakers Award. The Thomas Whalen Memorial Award for Board Excellence was presented to Gary Jendras and Joanne Meyer Jendras for their 12 years of service and dedication to New Ground. The Mairead M. Barrett Founder’s Award was given to New Ground’s Young Professionals Board for all of their guidance on “going virtual” through the pandemic. All of the honorees played a significant role in shaping New Ground over the years and have made a positive impact on the homeless population we serve.

With 250 guests gathered, incredible auction and raffle items up for grabs, and delectable food and drinks, together we raised over $280,000 for New Ground’s mission: “Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness” for Veterans and families on Long Island. This is our most successful fundraising event since New Ground began in 1991! With the growing needs on Long Island, this tremendous support could not have come at a better time. THANK YOU for believing in and empowering the parents, children and Veterans working so hard to get their lives on track and become self-sufficient.
