How Can You “Shelter At Home” When You Have No Home?

A Special Message from Shannon Boyle, New Ground’s Executive Director:

These days we find ourselves in uncertain times with the world around us changing rapidly. As humans, we are naturally social beings, finding comfort in our connections and the support of others when we face stress and uncertainty.  Instead we are being asked to stay apart and isolate to best take care of each other and protect everyone’s health. Such isolation is not easy.

Because of COVID-19, we are all thrust into a world that is often only known by the most vulnerable in our society. The homeless Veterans and families of New Ground experience this isolation and worry day after day, month after month, sometimes for years. They, like many of us under the current circumstances, feel alone, disconnected and afraid.

Unfortunately, those we serve will also be the hardest hit by this crisis. Living in shelters, motels or other temporary housing, they are very vulnerable to exposure of the virus.  Some are being told not to come to work, but without paid time off, they have lost all income. Others have already been laid off and face immediate bills they cannot pay as they have little to no savings and no safety net beyond what they receive from New Ground. Our mothers, fathers, Veterans and children are in greater need than ever before and we at New Ground are working to rise to this challenge and continue to provide the best we can.

Although our office is currently closed with our staff working remotely from home, we continue to hold meetings by phone with clients and we are delivering key basic supplies to our Veterans and families including food, hygiene items, diapers and baby items, supermarket gift cards, and more. But to continue to provide these necessities we need your help!

Please consider making a donation to help us support our neighbors most in need. Although we must separate now for the good of all, we remain a caring and compassionate Long Island community. Together, we can stay connected by helping the most vulnerable right in our own backyard!

With Gratitude,
