Hear directly from Makese, who talks about his success taking part in New Ground’s program. See where he came from and what he has accomplished today with New Ground’s support!

Makese, who is the oldest of 5 siblings, came into New Ground’s program as a sophomore in High School. His family had become homeless when the home their apartment was located in was foreclosed upon and they were forced to move out. Although Makese’s parents were both working, they didn’t have fulltime hours and didn’t earn enough to afford market rent and other basic bills. At that time, Makese thought he would have to give up on a dream of college to get a job to help his mom and dad afford housing. That’s where New Ground stepped in.

New Ground social workers helped empower Makese to finish high school and go off to higher education. He became a tremendous role model for his younger siblings. They also worked with his parents and each child in the family. While with New Ground, his dad completed a vocational program and got a much better job. His mom finally secure fulltime hours at her place of employment and they were able to move into a market rent apartment.

Makese put this whole video together himself – the music, the photos, the script – all of it!

He is one of many young people who have worked so hard with us to achieve an incredible future.
