You can help Veterans, parents and children realize their education goals.

Jane initially came to New Ground from a homeless shelter with two young children and an infant.  She could not afford market rent even though she was working fulltime.

While with New Ground, Jane completed a health care vocational program and used that training to secure fulltime work in health care earning a significantly higher salary.

When she graduated from New Ground in 2005, Jane was able to secure a market rent apartment for her family.  Jane has recently shared updates about her family’s continued successes.

“Everyone is doing so well and it is because of all the help with school. My daughter graduated college with honors and is now pursuing a Master Degree and working fulltime. My son also finished college at a culinary school and is working as a chef and really loves it. And I can’t believe my baby is now getting ready to graduate high school and figuring out what she wants to study. She really struggled and New Ground was so helpful with figuring out her learning difficulties and getting her all she needed to still ace her classes and start to like school. Having seen her older brother and sister succeed, she knows she can do it too. That is what New Ground gave all of us. The belief that we could do it – and we are, we really are!”

Education Assistance Service Program

New Ground believes education is essential to overcoming homelessness and poverty.  Education resources and tools are offered to Veterans and parents returning to school to secure a higher education for a future career and increased overall earnings. Children and youth receive critical supplies and opportunities not provided by their schools that are otherwise unaffordable for the families.

New Ground Social Workers help with:

  • Critical Needs for students K - 12: basic and specialized school supplies, uniforms, school trip fees, afterschool activity and team sport fees, musical instrument rentals, specialized study guides, eye glasses, SAT and other study courses, school graduation and college application fees, and more.
  • Critical Needs for adult students: supplies not covered by financial aid such as application and entrance exam fees, study guides, transcript costs, school fees, text books, uniforms, basic and specialized school supplies, transportation expenses, daycare assistance while parent attends classes, and more.
  • Tools and assessments: for adults and teens to assist with determining an academic track and overall career goals based on interests, experiences, timelines and abilities.
  • College/ Vocational Preparation: evaluating education programs to meet career goals, exploring various school options, education financial planning, time management skills, and outlining the necessary steps to successfully complete an education program.
  • FAFSA Application: completion of all documents necessary to secure financial aid, assessing aid awards and feasibility of school options based on funding, and planning for future repayments.
  • Education Assessments: academic testing to determine and document potential cognitive and learning difficulties that may impact overall academic success.
